In a move to make the car unimpeachably legal–and to shut Porsche up–BMW offered to sell 10 road cars. They had the dry-sumped P60B40 rated at 380 horsepower and manual gearboxes.
The M3 GTR was a surprise when it was released in 2001. Designed to race in American Le Mans under the GT category, this car won 7 out of the 10 events of the 2001 season, significantly beating the Porsche 911 GT3-R.

At Sebring in the US state of Florida, the new BMW M3 GTR will be making its debut in the GT class of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). JJ Lehto (FIN)/Jorg Muller (D) will be putting it through its paces under race conditions for the first time in this Saturday's Sebring 12 Hours. The car is powered by a V8 engine producing over 400 bhp and is the first of four BMW M3 GTRs developed in Munich for the 2001 season. The other BMW M3 GTRs will in due course be driven by the second brace of drivers of Team BMW Motorsport, Fredrik Ekblom (S) and Dirk Muller (D), as well as by the BMW North America-backed BMW Team PTG with its regular drivers Hans-Joachim Stuck (D)/Boris Said (USA) and Bill Auberlen (USA)/Niclas Jonsson (S). At Sebring the BMW pilots, with the exception of Lehto/Muller, will be driving last season's BMW M3 GT. "In the BMW M3 GTR, the philosophy behind BMW's high-performance M models has, in tandem with BMW Motorsport, been consistently developed into a race car primed for action in the ALMS," says BMW Motorsport Director Dr Mario Theissen. The USA and Canada are BMW's most important export market. The year 2000 saw another increase in vehicle sales there -- amounting to 22 per cent this time. Models from the M range are particularly popular in North America, which remains unmatched by any other market when it comes to M car sales. Following two successful years of racing in the ALMS prototype category, BMW is now gearing up for its GT class entry. The deployment of the new BMW M3 GTR in this, America's most traditional long-distance race, will be an endurance test par excellence. Theissen's colleague, BMW Motorsport Director Gerhard Berger, has this to say: "The decision in favour of the project wasn't made until the end of September. We developed the car in record time and put the first example through its first functional test just a few days ago. We'll be jumping in at the deep end in Sebring, but there's no test that can replace an actual race. Naturally, kicking off with a 12-hour endurance event is rather extreme, not just on account of the distance but also because of the very uneven track." At their next race in Donington, BMW Motorsport will be fielding two M3 GTRs for the first time. The American Team PTG will be debuting with its two BMW M3 GTRs in the fifth race of the season at Sears Point, California. Beneath the beefy silhouette of the new BMW M3 GTR beats a powerful heart: a four-litre V8 engine delivering more than 400 bhp. This short-stroke, high-speed unit epitomizes the tradition of M power and is compact enough to fit into the M3. In accordance with the regulations of the Automobil Club de l'Ouest (ACO), which also organizes the Le Mans 24 Hours, BMW Motorsport will be building a limited production run of M3 GTRs in addition to the race version. This vehicle is primarily intended for customer racing. Depending on national homologation regulations, however, it can be distributed with road licencing. Sometimes life rains happy little flowers. Take the other day, for example. There I was, having an otherwise normal day working out of my firm’s office in lovely Columbus, Ohio, and suddenly I wasn’t. Alien abduction can be the only explanation because there can’t be any logical reason I suddenly found myself in the race shop of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in Hilliard, Ohio, standing next to one of the most iconic race cars of all time: The BMW-powered McLaren F1 the pantheon of sports cars, the Gordon Murray-designed McLaren F1 sits at the highest step of any possible pedestal; it’s so iconic, it’s virtually mythic. And the race car that was born from the road car project (and begrudgingly by Murray at that) still exists as some sort of almost unbelievable footnote, a seemingly effortless tilting of the race world’s axis that hasn’t really been replicated since. It was a car so extraordinary that it won the overall victory at Le Mans on its first try, when it did so in 1995. The BMW S70/2 V12 engine was the beating heart of the F1 GTR and was used by BMW in the F1, the V12 LM and LMR Le Mans prototypes (and rather humorously in the one-off X5 Le Mans built to celebrate BMW’s overall victory at Le Sarth in 2000). The 6-liter motor made 618-hp and 480 lb-ft of torque and redlined at 7500rpm. Ironically, Le Mans GT1 class rules limited the amount of horsepower the race motors could make, so courtesy of an air restrictor, the F1 GTR’s engine actually made slightly less power (closer to 600-hp) than the road car. This slight limitation was more than compensated by the dramatically more aggressive aero package and lower overall weight on the race car, as evidenced by it achieving mph on the Mulsanne Straight when it arrived at Le Mans in particular car, chassis #17R, was campaigned at Le Mans in 1996 by BMW Motorsports (in conjunction with their Italian partner, Bigazzi Team SRL) and finished 8th overall (and 6th in the GT1 class). The F1 GTR also shares the road car’s central seating position, with two vestigial jump seats positioned on either side and slightly rearward. Getting in through the lattice of roll cage and into the central seat takes more than a few acrobatics, but once I pretzeled thusly, the fit of the cockpit and vista over the car’s snout feels perfect; the physical presence of the giant BMW V12 behind my head is palpable, and the aluminum shifter is perfectly at hand. Come on guys, let me fire this monster up! I think I may have blinded someone with my grin. And since a sister car, chassis #21, sold at a Gooding & Co. auction in 2014 for $ I was really glad I didn’t ding it getting in or all wonderful things must be, my time in the car was all too short (though I think I was a bit more graceful folding myself out). But what an amazing experience with an absolutely astounding piece of automotive and racing history. To biały kruk – dosłownie i w przenośni – bowiem auto jest białe i wyjątkowo rzadko spotykane – wyprodukowanych było ok. 10 egzemplarzy. BMW M3 GTR powstało jako przeciwnik dla Porsche w wyścigach American Le Mans Series. W zasadzie samochód był tak dobry, że zirytował Porsche, które wymusiło zmianę regulaminu w wyścigach American LMS i M-trójka wypadła z gry. Prezentowany samochód wystawiono na sprzedaż na aukcji w Melbourne. Ten egzemplarz startował w 24-godzinnych wyścigach Daytona i Bathurst, ale nie osiągnął tam dobrych wyników. Pomimo wyścigowej historii samochód trafił na sprzedaż. Jaka jest cena? Tego właściciel nie podaje. Możemy jedynie dodać, że jako nowe w 2002 roku M3 GTR kosztowało 250 tys. euro. Nadwozie sprzedawanego BMW M3 GTR ma numer #005, co oznacza, że pod maską pracuje 4,9-litrowy silnik V8 (S62B50) zaprzężony z 6-stopniową manualną skrzynią Hewland. To oznacza, że to pierwsze M3 z silnikiem V8 ever. I tu pojawia się pewien problem. Otóż niektóre źródła podają, że w oryginalnym M3 GTR pracował motor P60B40, a więc zupełnie inny niż w sprzedawanym egzemplarzu. To mocno podważa autentyczność sprzedawanego egzemplarza.
